Non-member Mr. LAI Kwok Wai asked at 5/8/99
How to apply for Patent in Hong Kong, Process, and how much will need to pay ?
Senior member Horace answer at 7/8/99: For the latest Hong Kong Patents please refer to the following information
http://www.info.gov.hk/ipd/events/pndfee_c.html , and refer to the
http://www.info.gov.hk.
Actually time and money depends on the complexity of the captioned patent
article and the objections being raised by counter parties. There is no
definite schedule but the certificate costs are fixed.
you can get most of the answers except Hong Kong that you needs to visit
them and obtain the catalogues. we must learn the technique of the search
and classification otherwise it is very difficult to locate the information
you need. Regards, Horace Volunteer Web master Mr. CHO Man Yu

"If someone only have idea in mind,
Can he register for patent in Hong Kong or he should have the real thing, "
The answer from senior member Mr. S.C.MOK is:
Only a description that can be understood by a person skillful in related
field to make the design is needed.
But if it is only a general idea with technical issues not fully taken
care of, it can't make a complete description and hence not patentable.
The answer from senior member Mr. Horace CHAN
Just the idea of a design of a product can be registered,
but he must be very careful, because once the application is filed,
there should not be any change.
Otherwise it will be very costly and sometimes not accepted.
Refer to the attachment from the issue of IPD.

He is a F7 student, He does not have money for joining HKIA, He has ideas concerning keyboards ,,,screens and computers ,
He thinks his ideas are feasible ,
but he is not sure whether someone has thought of it before,,
as they are actually quite ordinary,,
but sometimes he does think that it is worth trying..., What should he do?
The answer from our vice-chairman Mr. Horace CHAN
Dear Mr. Lo,
There is no subscription fee required for student members in HKIA. We aimed to
help and assist members for carrying out their ideas and designs but any effort
putting in practical prior to a search is not recommended. The simplest way for
a preliminary search is through the IBM database
http://www.delphion.com/ibm.html
Please try this web which is free and you can have a brief idea of the existing
patents registered worldwide. You must take into account that it is not a
thorough search and the result is not recognized by any of the patent offices.

If I have an idea, but I don't know whether it has implemented
by other people or not. Could you suggest some ways to me on
where can I get help for the investigation of the possiblity of my
idea?
The answer from snior member Mr. Horace CHAN
Dear Isaac, you can visit
http://www.delphion.com/ibm.html
which is very helpful and he can find some
similar inventions. Anyhow he need to have some technique of search otherwise
it will be very time consuming. If it is brand new idea than I advise him to
join us as a member so that our Technical Advise Group can help and all
discussions are restricted.
