In Oct 2005. The winner of [My Favorite Inventions for Quality Living Competition] was being promulgate in the ritual of open ceremony of Hong Kong Innovation EXPO.. Our Student Member Mr. HUEN Yin Fan Denis' invention " Artificial Intelligence Leg " has the honor to won the Junior group Champion . His invention arouses the social interest immediately, because his invention may benefit the disabled. His invention is now unceasingly improves. It will be in practice stage in coming near future.

Student Member Mr. HUEN Yin Fan Denis is modest honest young person, grows in a normal family, study at LA SALLE College Secondary School F7. In one hand, he must give attention to studies, school works, A-Level Exam. In other hand, he also needs to continue his research and invention. I hope this interview may share Mr. HUEN Yin Fan Denis' valuable experience with all students, who want to research and invention. Q : What make you decide to invent your invention 'Artificial Intelligence Leg'?
Denis The stories need to tell from very youth. When I was a small boy, My favorite toy is Robot, disassembles them, then assembles them again, draw the parts of robots down and re-design the Robot. When drawing the leg of Robot toy, A sudden flash thinking associates with the Cambodian people who mistakenly step on the laid land mine, they died or became disable, extremely pitiful. In the open market mechanical artificial limb is extremely expensive. This makes me decide to invent my invention a very low price 'artificial Intelligence Leg' to help them.

Q : After you had this motive and the concept, how do you conduct the research?
Denis The first step is collecting information. I went to the library, on Internet search for the Related material and also consults to my teacher. For Technology used in my invention side, I need to consult many different fields industrial engineers. My invention needs technology in many aspects.
Then organize all information I have collected and set up a research plan.
Start to invent, on research process as my invention needs technology in many aspects, Which I am not familiar with, so I need always to collect information and consulting Engineers and teacher.
Sometime, some process or step cannot work. So I need to redesign the process or step again. Then continue my research

Q : When conducts the innovation invention research, what difficulty has encounters? How can you solve them?
Denis When conducts the innovation invention research, I have met quite a lot of difficulties On the electronic circuit and also technology used in parts, met the operation with original design has the distinction. Short-circuits! Turbulent flows Eddy Current! Reverse voltage in electronic circuit, The volume and weight of parts too big and too heavy
Oh! Sometimes thinking is very laborious spending few days' times, but cannot solve the problem. I will try to use the knowledge from books, searching on the Internet for related information and also consult to my teacher and some industrial technician. These can help me to solute the problem.
When consulting industrial technician, sometime they will refuse to tell me, I may possibly interrupts to their business or some may dislike my consulting. Many times they answer not so detail or I misunderstand what they have told me. Sometime I need to consult many technicians & also many times before I can learn what I need. So in consulting, need to keep patient. Never getting annoy. As they say they have right not to teach me. Sometime consulting make me very fatigue. Finally I can slowly learn the technology that must use. .

Q : Is this influential to your life ?
Denis At first, I hope to complete this invention in the shortest time. Put all things aside Just research. I do not pay any attention to my normal school studies, so my school result suffers a disastrous decline. Luckily I can obtain my family, teacher's prompt instruction, and give me advice. Then I understand my research invention cannot succeed in a short while. Actually I have already spent countless month and days in the research. My invention is still under improvement. My 'Put all things aside Just research' manner is not correct. I should assign appropriate time to balance my school study and research. It is not worth for just a penny lost a pound! This invention is just a start, a very beginning one, if I have not learned enough new knowledge from my school books, how can I have another new invention in coming future. Much less The knowledge I got from my study may help to improve this invention, Thereupon I set a plan for my study and research. In one hand, I need to diligently studies. In other hand, I need to research only after my study. Usually on Saturday, Sunday and School Holiday I will spend more than 5 to 6 hours. In the school day I only spend 1 to 2 hours to research. If I have any invention inspiration, I will write them down or drawing them down in my notebook. Then on Saturday, Sunday and School Holiday, I will get out my notebook continue my research. After Properly assigns the time, there is improvement in various aspects. This causes me to understand it is very important to balance time between study and research. Good assigns of time are very important issue.

Q : What entertainment do you have?
Denis I like to watch some report science and technology and the related science program on TV and also like to see the science advantage movie primarily . This may increase the inspiration in Invention and research.

Q : As we talk about invention inspiration, what will cause invention inspiration come ?
Denis I think daydream or brain storm is very important in generating invention inspiration. The powerful and unconstrained style idea may assist to have new inspiration and goals. In other hand, through daily observations -- the characteristic, The functions. Then associate how to utilize, And Then using what I got in day dream and observation set up the experiment and the research. ..

Q : How about you're future development?
Denis I hope to study in medical department or the Bio-electronics department -- related artificial Intelligence aspect, I hope to associate artificial intelligence with human body. I hope this can have the help to the disabled

Q : The feeling of participate the competition ? Getting Award's feeling and later feeling?
Denis To participate competitions can get many new friends also research and invent like professor in university, researcher, young and adult inventors -- Friends from Media, Some person feeling invention is very interesting & some Govt. officer
After won award, Of course my family, teachers, my friends and I were very happy. In a very short time, some people may show friendship. Later, all reply is normal again. Now seldom I may invite by some parties to offer a speak in public to the schoolmate in school. As times go on, I believed All replies will be normal again.
Getting Awards is one kind of affirmation, encourages to impel oneself to continue to research the invention. It is also energy source to impel oneself. But certainly this should not be the target, that invention has the help to the humanity is most important

Q : Can you concluded what you have learnt ?
Denis In the research process, I have learnt knowledge outside our school. I have learnt how to search information and then reorganization information in a system; learn how to construct idea, the design, the research, utilizes knowledge to practicable application; learn with a lively mind. Other like how to contact media and how to offer speech -- the expression ability, the most important is time management. I need to sincerely thanks to my family , my teachers , my friends and someone who have help me , and also give me advice. Thanks.

Time Management
If a student hopes to conduct the innovation invention research, The most importantly studies are to assign appropriate one's own study and research time. They must keep in their mind the invention in hand now is just a beginning & a start. One invention may spend inventor few months to many years. A very good example is our student member Mr. HUEN Yin Fan Denis' invention. The whole processes of his research actually he has already spend many months or year from Idea, Collecting information, Researching, Redesin, improve ........ If someone only immersed in the research, he pays no attention to the studies. The outcome may say to be pitiful. May be one be so Lucky can really complete the invention in hand, but the studies have left uncultivated. One may not have any other new inventions, if one has not learned enough new knowledge from their school books. It may say Other all loses! The gain does not equal to the loss. Therefore, Well planned Time management, balance between school study and research time , is very important to a student inventor
