I have no comment on the event of Feb. Under the heat of e-commerce, nearly forty hundred thousand Hong Kong people rush to register for purchasing the e-commerce stock, www.tom.com. They nearly bound the traffic in Hong Kong.
There is a term " Portal web site" used by www.tom.com. Portal web site is new thing to me, I e-mail to a lot of scholars, and got the answer.
Portal means entrance, Portal web site means entry web site. There are two type of Portal web site --- Horizontal and Vertical
The simplified meaning of Horizontal Portal web site is a web site with very rich in content and widen in topics but not specific, the first page /Index.html page look like the index of a book, When you press on different titles, it will hyperlink to the required web pages.E.g. The fameous web site are www.yahoo.com, www.hongkong.com and the recent one www.tom.com, In fact most ISP's web site are Horizontal Portal web site.
Vertical Portal web site is web site ( with enrich content) on a specfic subject E.g. The most fameous www.microsoft.com.
The main different between Portal web site and one specific retailer's web site are boarden in content and the index.html/The first page
